In the event of theft, they are very difficult to trace.
Vehicles are not only stolen for resale. They are also used for exporting spare parts or for circuit racing. The likelihood of a stolen vehicle being recovered is very low, and even if it is, there’s no guarantee that the owner won’t be able to get it back. If the new owner has bought the vehicle in good faith, he or she can keep it, even if it is proven to have been stolen!

What are the rules for recovering a stolen car using a GPS tracker?
Before buying a GPS tracker, it’s important to know that in Belgium there are rules and laws in force concerning the recovery of stolen objects or vehicles. You’ve probably already heard of stolen Smart Phones that can be geolocated, but the police can’t intervene because they’re breaking the law. Aberrant, isn’t it? But that’s the law.
Only GPS trackers, accompanied by a Ministry-approved remote surveillance service, are effective for recovering stolen vehicles with police support.
Why is this? Because as soon as the alarm center gets hold of the stolen vehicle’s GPS tracker, tracking stops for the owner, in compliance with the law designed to protect the thief’s privacy.

How effective are subscription-free GPS trackers?
If there are GPS trackers on the market with or without a paid subscription, it’s because there are significant differences between these products that it’s important to understand.
- The first difference is that a GPS tracker without a subscription does not have an approved monitoring center to recover a stolen vehicle. In Belgium, they are ineffective for vehicle security and are generally not designed for this purpose.
- The second difference is the network they use. In most cases, for reasons of cost, subscription-free GPS trackers use the Sigfox network to locate the vehicle. This network is less powerful, less present (antennas) and less accurate than the EDGE or 4G cell phone network. To recover a stolen vehicle, it’s extremely important to have flawless network accuracy and responsiveness.
