Quick and easy to steal

Motorcycles are extremely easy to steal, and with the advent of battery-powered disc brakes, chains, U-bolts and padlocks are no longer effective. The thieves then load the bike onto a van in less than 60 seconds. Most thefts are carried out on new or very recent motorcycles. In Belgium, an average of 25,000 new motorcycles are registered every year, and over 3,000 motorcycles and scooters are stolen every year.

Motorcycle theft insurance is overpriced

In Belgium, to benefit from full or partial compensation following the theft of your motorcycle over 125cm3, you need to take out Full Omnium insurance, which will cost you between €160 and €300 per month, depending on the insurance company. However, this does not guarantee you 100% compensation, as you must meet all the conditions to qualify.

Before buying a GPS tracker, it’s important to know that in Belgium there are rules and laws in force concerning the recovery of stolen objects or vehicles. You’ve probably heard of stolen Smart Phones that can be geolocated, but the police can’t intervene because they’re breaking the law. Aberrant, isn’t it? But that’s the law.

Only GPS trackers, accompanied by a ministry-approved remote surveillance service, are effective for recovering stolen vehicles with police support.

Why? Because as soon as the alarm center gets hold of the stolen vehicle’s GPS tracker, the tracking stops for the owner, in compliance with the law designed to protect the thief’s privacy.

Although a padlock, chain or disklock is a deterrent, it’s not unbreakable. If the bike isn’t attached to a pole, it’s very easy for a thief to lift the bike and put it straight into a van. This takes a maximum of 60 seconds. On the other hand, if the motorcycle is attached to a pole, it makes the thief’s job slightly more difficult. At this point, he takes out his battery-powered cutter to cut your padlock, and whether it’s certified or not, nothing can stand in his way: maximum 120 seconds.

So what should you do to make your motorcycle as safe as possible?
