In case of theft, they are very difficult to find.
Motorcycles are not only stolen for personal use. Most often for exporting spare parts or for circuit racing. The probability of a stolen motorcycle being found is very low, and even if it is found, it is not certain that the owner will recover it. If the new owner purchased the motorcycle in good faith, they may keep it, even if it is proven to be a stolen motorcycle!

Easy and quick to steal
Motorcycles are extremely easy to steal, and with the advent of battery-powered angle grinders, chains, U-locks, or padlocks are no longer effective. Thieves then load the motorcycle into a van in less than 60 seconds. Most thefts occur on new or very recent motorcycles. In Belgium, an average of 25,000 new motorcycles are registered each year, and there are over 3,000 thefts of motorcycles and scooters annually.

Motorcycle insurance against theft is prohibitively expensive
In Belgium, to receive full or partial compensation following the theft of your motorcycle over 125cc, you must subscribe to a Full Omnium insurance policy which will cost you between €160 to €300 per month depending on the insurance company. Without guaranteeing 100% compensation, as you must meet all conditions to benefit.

Before purchasing a GPS tracker, it is important to know that in Belgium there are rules and laws in force regarding the recovery of stolen objects or vehicles. You have surely heard of stolen smartphones that can be geolocated, but the police cannot intervene for fear of violating the law. Absurd, isn't it? But that's the law.
Only GPS trackers, accompanied by a ministry-approved remote monitoring service, are effective for post-theft recovery of stolen vehicles with police support.
Why? Because as soon as the alarm system takes over the GPS tracker of the stolen vehicle, the location tracking stops for the owner in order to comply with the law protecting the thief's privacy.

If there are GPS tracker products with or without a paid subscription on the market, it means there are significant differences between these products that are important to understand.
- The first difference is that a GPS tracker without a subscription does not have an approved monitoring center to recover a stolen vehicle. In Belgium, they are ineffective for vehicle security and are generally not intended for this purpose.
- The second difference is the network they use. In most cases, for cost reasons, GPS trackers without a subscription use the Sigfox network to locate the vehicle. This network is less powerful, less present (antennas) and less precise than the EDGE or 4G cell phone network. To recover a stolen vehicle, it is extremely important to have impeccable network precision and responsiveness.

Although a padlock, chain, or disc lock are deterrents, they are not inviolable. If the motorcycle is not attached to a post, it is very easy for a thief to lift the motorcycle and place it directly into a van. This takes a maximum of 60 seconds. However, if the motorcycle is attached to a post, it slightly complicates the thief's work. At that moment, he takes out his battery-powered angle grinder and, whether certified or not, nothing resists him: a maximum of 120 seconds.
So what should you do to make your motorcycle as safe as possible?
The most effective solution is to equip your motorcycle with an audible alarm accompanied by a GPS tracker.
